Exploring the World – One Image at a Time

Saskatchewan wild life

They Walk Among Us

I had the privilege of seeing a herd of about 40 white tail deer. Spring is slowing arriving in my area and the deer are on the move. For awhile it was a pretty decent winter for them, then the snow started to pile up deep and hard. In some areas on hills the wind cleared the snow away and the deer were able to graze. I hope you enjoy these graceful animals.

A Challenge

If you are familiar with Facebook, you will have seen the challenges people send out — post a photo each day for ten days and nominate another person to do the same each day. I usually avoid these as I don’t have ten people to nominate. A friend approached me about doing this and she agreed that I could post the ten photos without nominating anyone. Here are the ten photos that I posted.

PWP week of Dec 24 – Dec 30 23

Last day of the year. A year that went by very fast. This weeks post has a bit of everything. More Christmas, the last of the year. Last of the year of everything. Dogs, trees, frost, whole moon. Finally learnt how to take decent shots of the moon. Even got a shot of it while I was in the city. We had frost yesterday, it painted everything white. Made plain old barb wire knots look pretty good. The end of the year means a new calendar for 2024. I’ve included the shots we will get to look at monthly for a whole year. The end of the year also means the end of my weekly posts. 52 weeks 52 posts. I’d like to thank everyone who came along with me for the ride. I hope you enjoyed the weekly offerings. Although there will no longer weekly posts. I will be still be out and about with my camera and will post what I capture. Online photo courses are on the schedule for 2024. Will post what I learn. I wish everyone of you a fabulous 2024.

PWP week of Nov 12 – Nov 18 23

This week’s content is a bit different. Still my photos but they are photos from previous years. The photos here are shots used for calendars for bygone years. Hence the fancy borders. It was bitter sweet going thru the files. Brought up lots of memories, some of them sad as I still really miss my four legged friends. We had a lot of good times. The shots with all the numbers on the bottom, are from my trusty assistance the trail camera. I did use my camera this week but the shots I got were Christmas decorations and no matter how the stores think, I think it is to early for Christmas content. Enjoy!

PWP week of Nov 5 – Nov 11 23

The days, weeks are just clicking by. The weather has been exceptionally mild which makes everything better. Except, rain in November is never nice. The roofing we have on our house/barn grows some really long icicles and icy patches on the step which i discovered last night. All is good just a bit tender. Another thing I discovered yesterday, not only is Chase a good model, his beautiful coat makes an awesome back ground. Jewelry and treasures always are fun to preserve. I captured a pretty young lady out with her pup this week. I have a plant in the south winter I’m trying to keep healthy til spring. So far so good. Once again my assistant the trail camera was on the job and caught the coyote as he went thru the pasture.  For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. PWP week of Oct 22 – Oct 28 23

The camera had a well deserved rest this week. The white stuff arrived and I’m not a big fan of winter. I could have taken lots of photos of the skies as they were spectacular but figures I had enough of sky shots for awhile. So we have shots of the moon. Still practicing but seem to be getting a bit better. I tried a bit of ICM – in camera movement. And I used some of the presets on some flowers. They are fun to try. We had a visitor one day and I don’t think he was anymore happy to see the snow than I was. He didn’t hang around very long. Tuff arrived on the deck for a short visit. I wonder what next week will bring.

PWP week of Sept 24 – Sept 30 23

I’ve posted a variety of shots this week. I thought it would be a bare bones post but I got lucky. I had time to fill so went to one of my favorite places – Regina Floral Conservatory. It didn’t disappoint. Beautiful fall decorations and the flowers were awesome. There is a new horses sport, or new to me. I went to watch a polocrosse clinic. Here is a link that explains it if anyone is interested. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polocrosse To many things to think about at once for me. I love finding murals in unexpected places and that I did with the ones of the Girl Guides. I was one once upon a time. The fine art I saw in a public place and was quite taken with it. The Eiffel Tower I found close to home. It was featured a Kit Kat bar. I took a few almost night one of the moon and Josie. For some of the shots this week I used a Lens Baby soft focus lens. I love the effect it gives. There are shots a fox that is hanging around, a lady bug, new growth and some miscellaneous ones. Enjoy. PWP week of Sept 17 – Sept 23 23

Wow, one more week in September! This month has gone by in a blink of an eye. Lots of colorful leaves this week. We’ve been having strong winds and the leaves are falling fast so I took advantage of the remaining one as I don’t know how long they will be hanging around! Had company one day this week and we toured a couple small towns. I don’t know what the Lady in White represented but she looked nice. There are always treasures to be found. We’ve had a fox going thru the yard setting the dogs off. Could be one that was raised here in the spring. Usually they don’t come back. My assistant – the trail camera caught a couple shots of it. Not Geographic quality but nice to have. It was a quite week, which I know I will have more of, so I persuaded a couple models from the toy-box to work with me. We have some birds and of course dogs – both Chase and Josie. Enjoy! For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. PWP week of Aug 13 – Aug 19 23

Another week in the books or photo album. No great features. Created an “on black” shot of Chase. He lays with his head on a paw and always looks so pensive. The route we take for our morning drive goes past the buffalo pasture so they are always reedy models. By the corner where we turn to come home there has been a young hawk for the past few days It’s not to sure about flying away from it’s perch and having me there drives mom crazy. She is in the air above me screaming. The last trip the youngster did move from one fence post to another. Saw an unrelated hawk on our drive one morning. More hummingbird shots. Some were taken with my phone thru the window. The purple wedding decorations were in a store I visited. Wonder if purple if THE color this year! One morning Chase tracked down a little muskrat. Removed Chase from the scene; caught the muskrat and carried it to the dugout and watched the little guy swim away. That was enough excitement at 6:30 in the morning for one day. More dog shots. Hope you enjoy this weeks contribution. For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. PWP Week of Aug 6 – Aug 12 23

This week was this Photographers dream week. Remember I talked about feast and famine? Well this was definitely a feast week. I attended a day of gymkhana and got shots of the stars of the arena. A few contestants also. The crops are turning fast and I love the variants in color. We have buffalo living close and we visited them a couple of times. Chase wasn’t impressed. We found a few bushes of buffalso berries. They make great jelly for pork! The hawk you will see is a very upset mother as her child just sat on a fence post as I approached. She was not impressed. One morning on our mini tour we saw a mule deer doe and her youngster. On the creek near home there is a congregation of pelicans and a couple of herons. Hope you enjoy this weeks offering as much as we enjoyed finding the shots. For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. PWP Week of July 16 – July 22 23

I apologize for the lateness of this post. There was a pasture fence to be mended and it was in worse shape then anticipated. Horses are safe and I won’t be spending time running them down. Hope you had a good week. Mine was decent. Weather starting heating up close to the weekend. Will be sticking close to the house today. On the menu this week we have dogs, skies, and sunflowers. It is haying season in my part of the country and we have some shots of that. A neighbors cow was close the morning I saw the deer in our pasture. The swallows are availing themselves of the dogs water. That’s it for this week. Enjoy.

PWP week of June 18 – June 24 23

This week is just about foxes. Once again mother fox had her litter across the road under the bins. With the help of my trusty assistant the trail camera, along with my DSLR, I was able to get some shots of the little ones. Chase was the model of the week again. I’ve been watching some dog photography experts on You Tube and we did a bit of practicing. Slowly he is learning. All good things take time. We are having fun and strengthening the bond between us. Enjoy. For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. Click on the image and then right click to move thru the gallery.

PWP week of June 7 – June 10 23

Weather wise was about the same this week but was able to get out and click the shutters. We have Chase looking down to China and one of his pretty paws, A butterfly landed on the deck and stayed long enough to have her picture taken. I found a home for some of my photo props so I took a few more shots of the before they left, I’m thinking I should have keep the little rabbit but he is gone now. Tis rose season now. I got a few shots of them. They don’t last long. My assistant the trail camera took the shots of the magpie and the fox. She doesn’t look in a great a shape. I image she is nursing several little ones. She sets the dogs off barking some nights. I had a grad/family photo shot this week. It went well. I’m hoping to post some of the shots in my portfolio page. The little boy blowing bubblies is from the same shot. A weather system was moving in quite fast so I didn’t get as many images of the bubble boy as I had hoped. Maybe next time. For those of you who don’t know, I’m living on the farm I grew up on. This year school age children have moved into the district so the school goes by same time , same road as it did when I walked out to the road to catch it to go to school (different driver). Memories. For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. Click on the image and then right click to move thru the gallery.

PWP week of May 7 – May 13 23

This week if all about spring. It’s here. Trees are greening up and grass is green in most places. Caught some crocuses before they left for another year. They don’t last long. Next will come the roses. On the way home. i caught a sea creature in the creek. Not sure but I think it was a muskrat. I took the camera with my Lensbaby on it out for some shots. A couple Mourning doves hung out in the yard for awhile. Also a fox decided to have a nap in the manure pile. Till next week. PWP week of Apr 9 – Apr 15 23

Feast or famine that’s the way it goes. This week there was numerous photo opportunities. Easter — Megs had a visit from her friend Candy Floss. Always a pleasure when friends drop in. Mother Nature tried to trick us into believing it was Christmas by showering us with a lot of wet white snow. The horses weren’t impressed. I don’t think anyone was. Thanks to social media I’m able to view other photographer’s work. The ones I really admire are the ones that visit animal shelter and provide photos to increase adoption. I could never do this. I’d end up bringing all the pets home and if not that, do a lot of crying. Those eyes would haunt me forever. So I’ve decided to practice my craft another way. I’m told I have more stuffed animals than most children so I’m going to put them to use. You may have met a few of my plush friends in previous posts. I’m going to stage them as I would an actual pet. It will be good practice for when I met a real model and it will be fun. In this post you will meet Rugs the golden lab puppy. Gus the hound and Fritz the poodle. Along with the real thing – Josie and Chase. I”ve been most fortunate in acquiring the book Dogtography by Kaylee Greer. It is wonderful. Hopefully I will be able to improve my skills some. The little squirrel was back for a short while. Lots to see this week. Hope you enjoy the shots.

PWP week of Apr 2 – Apr 8 23

As the rabbit in Alice in wonder land said — I’m late I’m late. All I an say is that sometimes life gets in the way. I was still driving into the city most days this week so I didn’t get much of a chance for creativity. Mother Nature helped out by sending a mule deer doe and her twins. They have taken residence just north of home. I’ve seen them a number of time. And I remembered to leave a camera in the car. Megs came for an Easter visit and I was able to get some Easter photos of her and her friend. It’s always fun to have an infant photo shot. My Easter plush friend came out of the box for a quick play session. There are no sky shots or dog shots this week. Happy Easter to all. Hope you enjoy this weeks contribution. PWP week of Mar 12 – Mar 18 23

It was a good week once we got dug out AGAIN. Hopefully not to many storms will roll thru. Living in Saskatchewan one can’t help being amazed by the skies we have. And they change so fast. I see unique cloud formations while out doing chores and by the time I get out with the camera they are gone. We have a squirrel hanging around again. I will try and get more pics of him. Took a road trip to Fort Qu’Appelle Saturday. Chase needed a new harness for the car and the pet store there is great. Along Bay Ave there are beautiful statutes carved from wood. All done with a chainsaw. Here is a link about the creator https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/carving-art-artwork-fort-qu-appelle-pandemic-1.5652077 The bird houses were along the way. The shots of the white tailed deer are from the trip to the valley also. Like the sky shots, there will always photos of dogs! I wanted a picture of an old window frame for a project the pigeon was a plus Enjoy

PWP week of Mar 5 – Mar 11 23

The end of this week we had a good old blizzard. Was pretty intense for a while. The pups and I ventured out when there was a a bit of a break and visited the horses. Jazz’s ears where outlined in white. Up until yesterday the deer in our area were finding it difficult to get down to the grass due to the hardened snow. Now there is more snow to contended with on the hardened surface. One evening we had a herd of mule deer come to the yard. They migrated to the area we feed the horses. And more wildlife came to the yard this week. There seems to be an abundance of prairie chicken this year. Later in the day the flock I took pictures of went right through the yard. I never know what my camera with catch on any given day.  For those of you who follow my posts, I try and have the content posted by 9:00 (CST) Sunday AM. PWP week of Feb 12 – Feb 18 23

The weeks are flying by. Soon we will be March and soon Spring will be here. We had a little white visitor this week. A weasel has moved in. We haven’t seen many mice this winter and he is probably the reason. Chase seems to be able to tell when he is out and about. The weather has been unsettle this week, providing some awesome skies. Only February and we have some pretty huge snow banks. You’d think with all that snow it would be a lot of runoff but the experts say it will be a normal one for our region. Once again we have shots of the pups. They see a camera and seem to think they are the models. Which they usually are. I may gave caught a shot of a UFO. Enjoy. PWP Week of August 9 2020

This week was a quite one.  Didn’t venture far from home until Saturday. My assistant the trail camera did an awesome job capturing deer and a fox.  On Saturday I went to the Kahkewistahaw Open rodeo.  Spent a wonderful afternoon.  I’ve posted some of the action here.  More will be posted on the Western Images page.  Check there for a complete collection.  Coming home I was fortune enough to come upon a two families of mule deer.  A buck was travelling with the one group.  Then a bit further up I came across a mother raccoon and a young one.  The young one disappeared into the crop fast but Mom was curious.  I hope you enjoy this week’s collection.  No flowers or pets!!  Till next week.

PWP Week of July 26 2020

Happy August 1.  Happy long weekend to my Canadian friends.  And a good friend is celebrating a birthday.  Birthday wishes coming your way.

This week’s collection is mixture of images.  There was no travelling, spent some time in Studio 13.  Practicing with my Lensbaby Composer.  Our flowers are starting to bloom so I have lots to practice on.   I’ve included a few barrel racing and rodeo ones taken the weekend of July 18.  The one of the steer wrestle did quite well on Instagram. My assistant the Trail Camera caught an encounter between the resident fox and our visiting raccoon.

I’m thinking of creating a “Western Images” page of rodeo, barrel racing, western accessories and horses.  And a “Treasures and Keepsake” page.  I’ve included a few of these shots in this week’s collection.

PWP Week of July 19 2020

Another week in the book.  It was a hot humid one here.  The Boy and I spent a lot of time in the house.  Sunday wasn’t too bad, which was a good thing as I spent a few more hours photographing the rodeo slack.  Lots of pictures of cowgirls and cowboys riding gorgeous horses.  The trail camera did an awesome job of capturing our deer and the foxes that share space with us.  I did manage to get pictures myself of a doe and later two fawns.  Due to the high temperatures we spent some time creating in Studio 13.  I hope you enjoy this week’s photos.  We had fun taking them and editing them.  Till next week!

PWP Week of July 12 2020

This week marks the half way point of July.  Summer is going by really fast.  Most days the weather doesn’t realize it’s summer.  Nights and mornings are pretty cool.  The Boy and I went on a rode trip and broadened our horizons and add new content. Found some more wall murals in a small town.  These are pretty old but I think they are still wonderful. My assistant the trail camera took some wonderful shots of three whitetail does.  I’ve included quite a few of them as there are so beautiful.  Such big eyes. The first rodeo since Convid9 appeared happened this weekend.  I went and photographed some of the slack Saturday AM.  It was a night rodeo so that makes it a no go for me. I’ve included a few from the day.  Nice horses.  Good riders.   Hope you enjoy this weeks collection.

PWP Week of June 28 2020

This week was a week of celebration.  July 1st  for my Canadian friends and July 4th for my American friends.  Hope all had a good time.  I spent July 1st home with my family. The only fireworks was the discussion on what to have for supper!  We had warm/hot weather and thunderstorms this week.  The shots of the clouds are straight out of the camera.  No magic editing.  The clouds looked fierce but we only had minimum wind and 3/10th of rain.  My assistant the trail camera caught a whitetail doe and her fawn and two of the bucks that spend time in our area. The Boy and I went on a road trip one day.  Saw some cattle and a moose on a hill that someone had built .  Looks pretty realistic. One evening when we were out and about, there were turkey vultures flying over head.  That does give a person a funny feeling!  On one of our hot days The Boy and I spent time in Studio 13 experimenting with different props and backgrounds.  I had a good time, felt good getting the creative parts of the brain working.  The Boy had a good nap!

All in all it was a good week. Hope to see you next week.
